The Divine Office Festival - Mozart Vespers

Rowan Pierce Soprano
Merton College Choir
Instruments of Time and Truth
Benjamin Nicholas
director

This concert evokes the musical drama and splendour with which Vespers was celebrates in late 18th-century Salzburg, where Mozart worked in the early part of his career. Mozart’s skills as an operatic composer are apparent in the dramatic treatment of the psalm texts of the Solemn Vespers de confessore, and even more so in the virtuosic solo motet Exsultate, Jubilate, sung here by award-winning soprano Rowan Pierce, which ends with the famous exuberant Alleluia.

This performance is part of the Divine Office Festival 2021. Full details, including booking information, can be found on the Martin Randall Travel website.

Battaglia! Cornett and Violin - A Contest of Equals

IT&T Summer Concert 6 Header.jpg

This concert is part of the Instruments of Time & Truth Summer Concert Series 2021.

Accounts of concerts in the 17th and 18th Centuries are of full tales of star musicians one-upping each other, engaging in musical contests for the attention of the fickle and adoring crowds, and pushing their instruments to their limits.

This concert is a battle between the two proudest instruments of them all: the violin and the cornett. Gawain Glenton (cornett) and Bojan Cicic (violin) will duel it out in a dazzling display of music by Falconieri, Merula, Cazzati,Castello, Fontana, Marini, Cima, Bassano and Rognoni, with Silas Wollston attempting to keep everything in some semblance of order from the organ. An unmissable musical showdown!

Primus Inter Pares: Mozart's Clarinet Quintet

IT&T Summer Concert 4 Header.jpg

This concert is part of the Instruments of Time & Truth Summer Concert Series 2021.

Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet is one of the earliest, best-known, and best-loved works for the clarinet, but it’s rarely heard on the instrument for which it was originally written: the Basset Clarinet, which takes its place as “first among equals” in this dazzling chamber work. In this performance, on period instruments, we are matching this beloved piece with a lesser known but charming early quartet by Mozart for a perfectly balanced summer evening.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791):

String Quartet in C Major K157

Clarinet Quintet in A Major K581

Featuring: Sarah Thurlow (Basset clarinet); Liz MacCarthy and Jean Paterson (Violins); Vanessa McNaught (Viola); Gabriel Amherst (Cello)

Stylus Phantasticus: The Soundworld of Bach's Predecessors

This is the opening concert of the Instruments of Time & Truth Summer Concert Series 2021.

Today we are very familiar with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, but what sort of music was being published a generation, or two before him? Some of the most famous composers of their time, who were still composing during Bach’s formative years, have fallen into relative obscurity today. Tonight’s programme aims to bring those composers into focus, and to compare their works with Bach’s own style, showing that Bach was indeed indebted to his predecessors, with sometimes striking similarities.

Should we become more familiar with the music of Walther, Westhoff, Böhm, or Schenk? We hope that, after this concert, you will be inspired to further explore their music, discovering the sound world that was such an important part of Bach’s early life.

Johann Jakob Walther: (1650-1717)

Scherzi da violino solo, 1676: Sonata VIII; Sonata X “Imitatione del Cuccu”

Georg Böhm (1661-1733)

Präludium, Fuge und Postludium 8’ in G minor

Johann Paul van Westhoff

Sonata “la Guerra”, 1691

Ernst Christian Hesse (1686-1762)

Paysan en Rondeu for viola da gamba and basso continuo in D major

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Toccata in D major BWV 912

Sonata for violin and basso continuo in e minor BWV 1023

Featuring: Bojan Cicic - violin; Susanne Heinrich - viola da gamba; Chris Bucknall - organ and harpsichord

Tickets can be booked through the Tickets Oxford website; by calling Tickets Oxford on 01865 305305; or in person at the Oxford Playhouse.
