Marc-Antoine Charpentier spent his last years touched by the light of the stained-glass windows of the finest monument in Paris, La Sainte Chappelle. Their intense colours and luminosity bathe the Chapel in a kaleidoscopic outburst; they also cast their brilliant hues over Charpentier’s masterpiece Missa Assumpta est Maria, written for this very space. Indeed, Charpentier goes about his work just as a grand master might, walking us about his text, palette loaded with all the pigments of the rainbow. A painter with an abundance of ideas, constantly surprising us with fresh detail, but never losing sight of his subject. Come and be dazzled. If you like Henry Purcell, you’ll like this.
